Have you ever looked at a run down building, park or cemetery and wonder what life (if you could consider a cemetery having “life”) it once had? Structures that at one time served a purpose and were full of vitality. Ever wonder about the people that once bustled about its halls or ground? I do. And not just grand spaces but even the meager and ordinary.
This is a blog to showcase the forgotten built environment (mostly in Jacksonville, FL, my home). Places that were once treasured or, in the least, given a distinct purpose in the past but have fallen to mere roadside rubble. I hope to also discover more about the spaces that others have deemed significant. Historic preservation is certainly a passion of mine, but it is my love of the hunt and discovery into history that people have failed to pursue that really gets me excited. I hope in some small way to shed light on a place or people of the past that deserve a second look.
Initially, I set this blog up to record my observations and duties as a volunteer at the Historic Preservation division of the Planning and Development department for the city of Jacksonville, Florida. However, there are only a few posts from that time period.
